Remember the Milk!

A while ago I found a service called Remember the Milk, I’m sure many others have heard of it – its basically an online service to manage tasks, with the ability to add deadlines and reminders. At the time I didn’t really have a need or use for it, however, I’d like to clean up my desk and get rid of the immense number of notes that I have lying around so I’m going to try and use it for this purpose.
The web interface is nice and clean and simple to use and add / manage tasks, enabling you to categorise them, search them, view by day, completed tasks, overdue tasks – a load of organisation basically.
Whilst I’m so far very impressed with the interface I was way more impressed by the amount of add-ins and gadgets for it – they go on and on!
For starters the simple ability to email tasks to a custom email address for them to be added to your list of tasks is nice, you simply follow a simple convention of tags to fill in fields ranging from a simple subject to tags, length, repeats, priorities and location.
Next is the gadgets available for Gmail and Google Calendar but also for the ‘Apps’ Versions of these for example I have them installed on my own domain which is a nice touch. These simply show you a list of recent tasks and enable you to add new ones and edit old ones.
There is a tie in with Twitter but so far I haven’t been able to get this to work but for those whom it works I’m sure it’s a nice touch.
There are also many others which don’t apply to me but are still a nice addition to the collection – MilkSync for Blackberry and Windows Mobile as well as apps for the iPhone and iPod Touch.
I’m not sure at the moment of how well the service will tie into how I manage my tasks but all of these add-ons can only help me to use the service to the most of its ability and get the most out of it so I look forward to updating you all on this soon… maybe.

My Best Gadget ~

I was just thinking to myself which of my reasonable collection of toys would be my best gadget and I found it easy to choose – my Nokia N95 8GB, it has now replaced a good few things in my day to day belongings but also replaced things that were even just for now and then.

Ironically I hardly make any phone calls on it at all but from the moment I get up till the moment I go to bed it typically is used for a good proportion of the day, On my way to work I use it to listen to the radio, whilst it isn’t a DAB radio or anything fancy and the reception tends to get a bit weak due to the fact I’m listening to Radio 1 rather than a local station I really like the convenience that it provides, from then I use it throughout the day for the obvious texts but also for keeping up to date on all my emails most of which I’ll admit are from play.com, ebuyer and the like but the Nokia Email client is a great addition to the phone, combined with Gmail IMAP it gives almost instant updates on emails.
Its also great for browsing the net, whilst the mobile network isn’t quite up to providing a lot of full websites it can cope with a few Googles now and then and more than copes with Facebook which is a joy to use on the phone on the bus etc.

Onto what it has practically replace – My camera, a while back my camera was a great tool, I’ve taken a lot of pictures on it over the last year but it has sadly been replaced by my trusty phone with its 5mp camera, its convenient and has a good enough quality to get me right through an evening out socialising and I don’t have to take multiple gadgets everywhere!.

Finally a function that whilst I don’t use very often I still enjoy a lot – the GPS, its a bit of a cheek of Nokia to charge for extra mapping facilities like directions within the Nokia Maps software but I get by using Google Maps just fine, especially useful for making sure the taxi you’re in is going in the right direction!
And that is why I think my Nokia N95 is easily my best gadget and well worth the money I spent on it!

Windows 7

Yes! I am still using windows 7, admittedly not on my Laptop anymore as it died on me so I went back to just plain Vista but on my main pc at home it’s still going strong and as good as ever. I’m a bit disappointed with Google Chromes compatibility – the ability to drag the maximised window from one monitor to another seems very buggy within it – presumably due to the customised title bar and tabs? But overall I still love Windows 7 – The ability to drag maximised windows from one monitor to another is still a great use to me and I’m enjoying the flexibility and ease of use its giving me rather than previously having to double click the title bar to restore down and then drag it over and then maximise it again, the process is much more user friendly now. I’m also finding that Windows 7 works a lot quicker and file transfer processes and fails a lot less than Vista, on top of this Windows 7 gives me accurate predicted times of completion and doesn’t crash explorer like Vista occasionally did.

In other news Google Chrome is another piece of brilliance I’m still enjoying, I’ve been using it as my main browser since its release all that time ago and I still enjoy it. The ability to search a website from the address bar by typing part of the site name in, pressing tab then the query is brilliant – it only works for sites you’ve previously visited and if they are compatible (e.g. Youtube) and the options also appear on the new tab page on the right. The browser itself I find is also rather speedy to start up and to use which is a plus.

I’m worried for Google!

Up until a minute ago Google had been throwing back the ‘This site may harm your computer’ error on every search result - even its own pages - for a little while. Whilst this was only occuring for around 5-15 minutes I have a feeling it may become some form of news, even if its just small blogs (much like I’m writing now). Whether it was hackers or just a little glitch in their Malware scanner I’m not sure but I do know they will be getting some publicity from it - probably just through blogs … but no news is bad news right?

I checked on the public twitter feed and noticed there were quite a few comments about the mighty Google fail too.

Credit to Google for fixing it in quick time but just remember - how many Google searches happen in the space of 15 minutes, I’m fairly sure Google may have lost a bit of money in that time.

Windows 7

I realise that every blogger under the sun is going to be blabbing on about Windows 7 for a long time to come after the first public beta has become available over this weekend. Being the Windows fanboy that I am I have already jumped on the bandwagon. I was lucky enough to pick it up easily yesterday afternoon, it downloaded in a nice time and I installed it, first on a virtual pc and when I discovered that wouldn’t cut it for properly playing with it I installed it on another partition I already had, the dual boot works perfectly as it did before so I’m very happy.

Unlike Vista the difference between its predecessor and Windows 7 seems to be behind the scenes rather than appearance. The taskbar is different - using icons rather than text to identify running programs, the Notification area in the bottom right is now a lot les cluttered as it lets you control what appears down there with a bit more accuracy.

The Start menu is very similar to Vista only making a difference to ordering and not much else. There is also a new feature called ‘Homegroup’ which I’m yet to explore as it requires more than one pc running Windows 7 from what I can gather its used to make home networking a tiny bit easier by setting passwords for access etc.
Apart from that and the different wallpaper I havent noticed many appearance differences … oh wait ..

**News Flash**

Paint looks different!
Now using a different layout for the tools Paint has a few more pretty features which is a welcome change.

Performance however is much better - It seems to be running a lot more smoothly than vista did, and thats coming from someone who loved Vista at all costs!

Hosting, Chrome and My N95

Hosting
Christmas time and its time for me to renew my website, thats all been done but now I have so many more features I’m trying to use them all at once, theres just so much to do on a web hosted server thingamabob – phpbb, wordpress and gallery’s galore!
I’ve been tinkering around with them all and installing boat loads of plugins for wordpress, something that I’ve always found with phpbb is that its easy to setup but its a royal pain to try and update, add plugins to and generally change. Sure themes and templates are easy but adding something as simple as a quick reply box is nowhere near as easy as it should be, its not even close to the ease of use that wordpress has to install plugins.

Chrome
A little while ago I wrote a little bit on Google Chrome, Since then I haven’t been using it too much but recently I’ve been using it daily on my laptop and quite a bit on my PC too – its just much quicker than Firefox to load for me, the only main problem I have with it is that it doesn’t feature any of the plug-ins that Firefox can offer, this may slow Firefox down for me in the long run but it does make it a better browser for me. A little better integration of flexibility would be a great addition to Chrome for me.

And Finally
I’ve had my Nokia N95 for a while now and I really am still loving it! – its much quicker than my old e65, it has more memory and more storage and better features – I’ve used the camera more than I’ve used any other mobile phone camera, purely thanks to the quality. I use it mainly for wap use – emails using Nokia Email and the Gmail application which bring different features to the table, Nokia Email is integrated and very smooth to run as well as inkeeping with the theme. The Gmail app on the other hand has its on styling and takes a little longer to load and use, however it has more control over the actions in terms of Gmail’s features – Searching, Archiving etc. They both offer what I need and at the moment they work in unison quite well which is a plus for me. I also use it for some simple web browsing – yes mainly Facebook (which has a fantastic mobile site – you can perform many of the normal functions just as easily) but also a small amount of research using Google.

I therefore love my N95 and don’t plan on replacing it for a while (last famous words?)
