Oh my how the price of technology changes…

Last Christmas Santa gave me an Advent 7110 laptop (1.70Ghz Cpu, 1Gb Ram and a 40Gb hdd - £400 from Pc World) I understand how the price of technology changes a lot but I feel rather annoyed at the difference that a year has made in the Laptop market.
The reason I went for the laptop that I did was for the 1.70 processor, which was the fastest in that price range at the time. I went into a PC World and Staples store yesterday and found plenty of laptops better than mine and in some cases cheaper. For example, this Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pi2515 has a dual core processor which is twice as good as mine, 2Gb of ram which is again twice twice the size of mine and a 250Gb hard drive which is 6 times as big as mine - all that from a five minute search. This does surprisingly anger me quite a bit as it means that year after year I could find laptops, which are quadruple the quality of mine. Perhaps a young entrepreneur could take advantage of this? - by running a service which upgrades laptops and pc’s annually in order to bring them up to date with the newer modern technologies for a small price which of course should work out cheaper than buying a whole new system every year. Would this theory work? - Sadly not. Manufacturers of computers must be making a lot of money through users buying a new system each year and either keeping the old one as a spare, passing it onto someone else in the family or possibly selling it (which of course would not get back as much as was paid for it a year ago).
I guess what I’m meaning by all this is that I like the fact that technology advances quickly, I just really don’t like the fact that this advance in technology means that computers and other gadgets go out of date very quickly – not good for their price and not good for my bank.

…and no good for the planet either. Where do es all this old kit go? I suspect most of it ends up buried in landfill.
But exactly what are Acer, Fujitsu, HP etc doing about this? Not a great deal as far as I can see. Is there somewhere you can take your old pc to have it cannibalised so that nothing is wasted?
I tried to get rid of a pc once, and even the charities would only take Pentium 4s and above… alas my trusty old thing wasn’t up to the task. So computer equipment manufacturers and retailers, please can you get a bit greener and help us recycle….

Do yourself a favor, get one of these PCs listed below. They won’t go out of style and you won’t feel cheated by price deflation.
Soon pocket PCs will sell for under $100US in discount stores. There will be dozens of brands from dozens of manufacturers. HP, Dell, and Sony are in Big Trouble. Their contractors — Asus, Wistron, etc. — and others are going to undercut them in a vicious price war.
Here’s the entrants (and proposed competitors of Eee) already:
Everex Cloudbook (for Wal-Mart)
HCL Mi Leap X (India)
e-Way Technology Systems (Taiwan) $150, 7″ PC
Gigabyte Technology (no details yet)
Cybertron CM900 Mini-PC
Micro-Star International ultraminiature Due July-Aug 2008
So get an Eee. It’s the Model-T of computing, and it will some day be seen as historic, after some of the leading brands like Dell are humbeled. Remember, S-C-E: Small-Cheap-Easy, the winning combo.
