Fast or pretty?

Heres a question for you – Would you rather have a fast or pretty system?

Imagine that the scenario is simple – one computer with average specs – would you rather have a fast operating system which just does the job and doesn’t have any bells or indeed whistle or would you like a pretty system which perhaps is a little slower buy looks a lot nicer whilst doing the jobs. I could put this into context and say XP vs. Vista but then the security issues, compatibility and transfer would be taken into account.

I personally love to have a nice pretty computer which has bells and whistles to show off to other people, I therefore like Vista, the sidebar, Aero and flip3d. When on Xp I like Rocketdock but when I get down to doing some video or photo editing I wish that I just had a fast system which could wiz through the processing of the files rather than sorting some pretty stuff in the background – there is a compromise to be had.

So, what would you like? – Fast and get the job done or pretty and show off to friends?

If its a straight choice between the two then give me a fast system. That said, it doesn’t mean to say I don’t like a pretty system but I’d be more happy to get rid of the wallpaper, drop the colours and disable most of the non-essential stuff in the taskbar just to get some extra juice out of the system. Maybe that’s because my system is quite out of date though - I think it would balk at the idea of running Aero.

Being a woman I’d want both! If I had to make a choice it would be fast - definitely :-P

Again a straight choice goes for the fast system. You have got to get work (or play) done; get it done. At present no competition between XP and Vista, XP WORKS! Even when (if) SP1 comes out XP is the winner. I’m willing to bet the NEXT OS will reject the gimmicks of Vista and be more firmly founded on XP. Remember ME? Vista seems to be more of the same. Interesting item in The Age on Sat 1 March “Microstoft Top Brass burned by Vista Problems” (theage.com.au for those who didn’t catch it) Bit off topic perhaps, but the bells and whistles of Vista try to hide it seems to be pure rubbish.
