When will my car drive itself?

I’ve recently started learning to drive and after only 8 hours of lessons I still don’t love it, don’t get me wrong its going to be brilliant once I’ve passed but I just don’t enjoy it as much as perhaps I should so its got me thinking – at what point in the future are we expecting cars to drive without the aid or hindrance of humans like in I-Robot.

I know that you can already get the system which parks for you but does this mean we are not that far from a completely automatic car? – just imagine it – potentially less traffic jams due to cars being smart enough to figure out where to go and avoid them, faster safe speeds and perhaps less accidents – if any at all?

Either way it would be a bit easier for me if cars drove on their own.

Cars don’t need you to be the driver.

They are called taxis and come complete with a good-humoured, helpful and modest person to do the driving for you.

Latest RAC estimates are that it costs £80 per week to keep a modest car on the road - a figure I think is on the low side. You’d get a lot of taxis for the same amount.

Mike, I hated being taught. I couldn’t get anything right half the time. It was only when I passed my test first time that I realised what was going wrong. I was driving but had to listen to a constant stream of instructions from my teacher and it was putting me off. Now I do like driving but don’t do much unless it’s chucking it down - oh, so I drive a lot lol.

Mark - where do you get your taxis from? Good-humoured? Helpful? Modest? (only joking, I know some very nice taxi drivers)
