What happens when you step away from a computer for 2 days?

Over the past two days (Friday and Saturday) I haven’t been on my computers very much,. On Friday it was my 6th form Valedictory (which I scrubbed up for, put a suit on and gelled up my hair) and yesterday I was out for a friends birthday however I get back today and find that the internet – it’s missed me.
Google Reader has over 600 unread articles waiting for me (I’m sure other people have more however) and Facebook seems to have missed me even more having sent me loads of emails to inform me of new goings on.
Do you think I perhaps have a little too much of my life on the internet? – I don’t, I think its great that I’m able to be spoon-fed so much information and keep up to date with stuff other people are doing on Facebook, isn’t technology wonderful!
One day I might actually use my phone to get onto both those services and they won’t miss me as much as they have done over the last few days.

Do you find that if you step out of the internet bubble for a little while, it misses you so much?

Facebook at work?

Facebook is becoming a bit of a bigger deal than Myspace did from what I can tell, its talked about a bit more and seems to have taken off in a bigger way, considering that – do you use it at work? – are you allowed to use it at work?

Some places I know have banned it, and there has been some controversy to allowing access based on other workers seeing what you’ve been saying about them and so on for example if another worker see’s your status update as ‘working with X and they are just getting annoying’ then bosses won’t be too happy when rifts form.

Going back to what Facebook is – I think it’s amazing, I don’t use it as much as I could but I do think that its premise and uses are brilliant in terms of what applications are available and what people are developing for it, they are rather clever and whilst its slightly unclear what ‘web 2.0’ really is, I think that Facebook counts – it has user contributed material, allows masses of communication and performs many functions (most of them useless of course but who cares?)

What does everyone think of Facebook then? (I’m keeping on the user contribution bandwagon – it will pick up one day)

To say that the internet today is better than the internet we knew many many years ago would be a huge understatement. From being used all those years ago for university’, research and the military to its many uses today is a massive achievement. Not only has the internet changed from when it was introduced, it has also changed peoples lives – well in a way – people can now do a lot of things on the internet (whether they do or not is a different matter):

  • Shopping – an obvious and yet very useful tool available on the internet now is the ability to shop – not only for new toys, gadgets and computer stuff but also for groceries, convenient goods and kitchen appliances.
  • Home videos – another obvious choice here is linked to YouTube, home videos and such posted on the internet, but there are a vast amount of websites which enable you to do this – Vimeo is another example of a brilliant website which in all honesty is exactly the same as YouTube. Read more
