Ahhh, the wonders of technology! I can sit and write this blog whilst waiting for an RAC man to fix my broken down car, stranded as I am, on a London arterial car park. Whatever happened to the boast that we would all be rescued from roadside boredom within 40 minutes? Read more

What do power cuts and shortages in South Africa have to do with computing in the UK?

An odd comparison you might think. But consider the situation where electricity is rationed, or at least in short supply, as is the case in South Africa. How would you handle keeping household and office equipment functioning under such conditions? UPS’s don’t generally work for a two hour stretch. How would you ensure that your workforce maintains a semblance of productivity without functioning tools?  Read more

Large Offices, Glass, Chrome, and Furniture from Star Trek

“The biggest decision we’ve made is to push into business applications,” declared Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer at the Dynamics-based Convergence conference in Florida last week. “I still get asked “is Microsoft a serious player in business applications?’” The answer it seems is, yes. “This is mission-critical for us,” thundered Ballmer.  (myCustomer.com 18/03/08)

The question of whether Microsoft is serious about business software is really a non-starter. Read more

In 2007, Google threw down the gauntlet to Microsoft. After years of denying that it was after the Microsoft Office space, the gloves came off, and following a spate of acquisitions incorporating word processing, spreadsheet, and other applications, the free bundle was revealed to the world as “Google Apps”. Every business has a dream. If not, why bother spending so much time and effort on something which other people are doing already? The difference is some businesses are ‘living the dream’ whilst others merely ‘talk the dream’. Allow me to explain. Read more

Another day and another government IT project running into trouble!  Many of you might be expecting now a list of 10 reasons why projects fail or succeed, but I will not go down that route.  Instead, there were two meetings I had this week which illustrate the difference between success and failure in business projects, or rather the potential for both. Microsoft and Yahoo! What’s the end game?

By Moshe Zeidman in Reader

Let’s say for arguments sake that Microsoft is successful in its takeover of Yahoo! Where does Microsoft see the end game? Granted that the biggest driver here is advertising revenue, but is that it? Will we get a Google imitation - just some software originally developed ‘the old way’, client-server and standalone products, others online apps? Read more
