Microsoft and Yahoo! What’s the end game?

Let’s say for arguments sake that Microsoft is successful in its takeover of Yahoo! Where does Microsoft see the end game? Granted that the biggest driver here is advertising revenue, but is that it? Will we get a Google imitation - just some software originally developed ‘the old way’, client-server and standalone products, others online apps?

If this is it, then yes, Microsoft could have the upper hand. Google is still playing catch-up in the business applications arena. Microsoft just needs to find a way to get its software online quickly.

My hope though, is that Microsoft retains its classic distinction between home and business needs. Google have blurred that line, and sees the way into business via consumer familiarity with its home applications -YouTube et al.

This would be an unwise path to travel in my opinion. There is space for both markets and more importantly, the needs of both groups are distinct and different.

Businesses put up with the ‘Flickr break’ and online video clip watching as it would the odd break for a smoke or a run to the loo - a necessary evil. But please don’t put Excel in easy reach of Live Spaces or whatever Facebook alternative they will offer! We might as well close up shop at UK Plc and become a nation of Facebook friends.
