“The biggest decision we’ve made is to push into business applications,” declared Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer at the Dynamics-based Convergence conference in Florida last week. “I still get asked “is Microsoft a serious player in business applications?’” The answer it seems is, yes. “This is mission-critical for us,” thundered Ballmer. In 2007, Google threw down the gauntlet to Microsoft. After years of denying that it was after the Microsoft Office space, the gloves came off, and following a spate of acquisitions incorporating word processing, spreadsheet, and other applications, the free bundle was revealed to the world as “Google Apps”.
