How to make a cheap multitouch pad:

Mike Skuse

Posted at 9:19am 11th May 2008

When I first saw this I thought that it wouldn’t be that easy to make or that it would require some parts which I just wouldn’t have but the reality is that I am SO going to be able to make it and hopefully, it will actually work. It looks cool just from the perspective of being able to do what we’ve seen in those Youtube videos of multitouch screens for..

Just an update on what else I've discovered... My Sony TH55 PDA synched without any problems - there's a Palm synch thingy already there when you install Ubuntu and I took all of 5 mins to set up and synch with Evolution mail. I still haven't managed a full synch with Vista (OK I will concede that I haven't looked into what the problem is but still, there were no problems..

Best Bargain ever

My shopping trip to Maplin today hauled a 500Gb seagate USB disk (as out of space due to a metaboli.co.uk subscription).   That was not the bargain of the day. As I was at the checkout I was asked "Do you want this USB Business card scanner" ..    for £2.30 ?    (RRP £69.99)   I said.   Yes.     And its great.    I needed one anyhow (Its..

How do you test a GUI?

Dave F

Testing, something I have never been happy about - there are just to many options. Maybe I'm a bit mathematical, a bit completist, alright perfectionist but if I can't do it properly I don't like to do it at all. I remember in my university days I was asked to write a "comprehensive" RAM test. Since any RAM cell could theoretically leak to any other I figured the only way..

Brits living abroad usually pine for something from home, often a specific consumable such as Marmite, pickled onion flavoured Monster Munch, Earl Grey tea or a favourite marmalade. Aussies will kill for the last jar of Vegemite, a pale imitation of the real McCoy, even if the canny Kiwi's have better taste and export an antipodean Marmite to Australia in a bid to re-educate their palates. It's the same with TV..

Large Offices, Glass, Chrome, and Furniture from Star Trek

This week I attended a meeting within the offices of one of the UK's largest software houses.  Having never been there before I was struck with how impressive the building appears as you approach by road.  It is an imposing and formidable structure, very angular and much glass.  This feat of modern architecture is in stark contrast to the barren "wasteland" that surrounds it. Even before entering the building, everything about the..

The engines are running at maximum Captain - she cannot take anymore

Our power problem deepen as the power to our building blinked off again this morning for just over one hour. The best we could do was limp ahead on impulse power to safely shut all the servers down in a safe way. Eventually the power man with the special finger turned up and flicked a switch and the power blinked back into life. The finger-crossing routine of restarting everything began in earnest. Finally,..

Like most people in IT, I belong to too many professional bodies. I am reminded of this every time another subscription invoice rolls in - mostly to the tune of £150 per year, or more. And each time I reach for the cheque book I ask myself the same question. Do I really need to belong to all these institutions, worthy though they may be ? It’s a..

Sorry, sorry, sorry... It's been ages since I've posted, I've been really busy trying to get my business up and running, not an excuse! Well OK it, but it's my story and I'm sticking to it! But to show I really and sorry, here is a list of some free software I've used in the past and still use today... I do remember the days when everyone was using those websites to download dodgy software, or those P2P programs. But those days are gone, the Internet is full of free software to do the job(s). My very own 'A' 'F' List (Free List). Paint.net - A powerfull image/photo editor.  Simple to use, but full of features! CutePDF - A cheap..

Bad Phorm

I've been interested by the news of Phorm, the ad-targeting system, and how bad it is for everyone's privacy and the such like. What drew me to it initially was a comment from a representative of BT on a news programme who suggest that BT had sought legal advice and found that not informing a focus group of in excess of 30,000 customers that they were taking part in a trial of..

Just in time to keep a future Visual Studio on the horizon before we actually make landfall on the shores of the new one, Microsoft have done the deed and made their first remarks on Visual Studio 10, part of the platform suite codenamed 'Oslo'. Corporate VP of their Connected Systems Division Robert Wahbe (resembling a smarter version of
