Preparing for clean up

My Vaio laptop is driving me nuts. Whenever I close MS Word it decides that it’s ’stopped working’ (I know, I just blooming well shut it down) and Windows needs to ‘check the problem’ (no problem, I wanted to close it - really). Then, if I don’t hit the ‘cancel’ button quick enough it re-opens Word. It does this with some other programs too but the Word one is extremely infuriating as I use it a lot.
There’s a couple of other niggles too, such as the computer telling me it ‘can’t find a document’ and then opening the darned thing two seconds later, so I have decided a fresh install of everything is in order. Trouble is, I just can’t face it! I know I’m going to have to back up everything, including emails etc and then it’s going to take me ages to reinstall everything.
Anyone got a magic wand?

Sorry, I leant my magic wand to a friend but I know how horrible the prospect of a fresh install is - thinking to yourself ‘Did I back that up properly?’
