Box Notes heads to Android

Cloud filing cabinet storage

Box has updated its Android app for smartphones and tablets that finally debuts its Notes tool months after it appeared on the iPhone and iPad.

The update also features expiration dates for shared links and administration tools.

Box users on Android platforms can update the app to version 3.2, which features the Notes tools. These tools allow users to create, view and edit Box Notes as they do on the web.

Box Notes product manager Jonathan Berger said in a blog post that with the app running on Android devices running Kit Kat, users will have access to such features as cut, copy, paste, bold, italic, underline, bullet list, numbered list, indent and outdent.

He also said there were additional new features to enhance productivity, including recently opened files, advanced settings for shared URLs and admin controls.

There is also a feature for users to create to-do lists hosted within the app and support for more languages as well. The 25 most recently accessed files are automatically recorded for easy access from within the app itself.

The update also brings new admin controls on permission levels, such as changing a link to only be accessible within a user's company. Admins can now set link expiration dates and prevent downloading of the file straight from the app.

New client controls to the Mobile tab in the enterprise admin console have also been added, according to Simon Tan, Box's product manager of Mobile.

"Now, you can prevent content from being opened into untrusted third-party applications, disallow copying text to the system clipboard or block automatic uploads from a device," he said.

"These controls will be available on your Box admin console within the next few days and will work with both Box for Android and iOS v3.2 and up."
