Pairing a wireless USB media player and PC via NFC
Wireless USB is about to get an update. Version 1.1 will reduce power use and improve battery life – “Power is king!” says Jeff Ravencraft, the Intel strategist who runs the USB Implementers Forum. But it will also add a new way of pairing wireless USB devices, using nearfield communications; instead of typing in a code or pushing a button, you just touch the two devices together.
ST-NXP, which contributed this to the standard, was showing a wireless media player that you could pair with a Lenovo wireless USB-enabled notebook using NFC so you could watch video on the bigger screen. That needs devices with wireless USB built in because when you’re using adapters speeds drop from the 260Mbit/s you can get with native devices to just 70Mbit/s for plug-in modules.
