Welsh schools' email goes open source

UK's largest educational open source email system, serving 40,000 users, is launched in Carmarthenshire.

By Nicole Kobie, 23 Jul 2007 at 12:03

The UK's largest educational open source email system has gone live in Wales, it was announced.

Carmarthenshire County Council hired services provider Sirius Corporation last year to implement the bilingual email portal for 40,000 students at the region's 15 secondary and 125 primary schools.

The council said it chose open source because it is secure, customisable and scalable.

"One of the advantages of open source software is its internationalisation capability," said Mark Taylor, chief executive of Sirius. "In this case, school children and staff had to have email in both English and Welsh."

Staff can manage the system centrally, while students are given a different interface based on whether they attend primary or secondary school.
