EE has flipped the switch on its 4G network in 18 more towns and cities across the UK.

The mobile operator has expanded its reach to areas in Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and England.

The next generation network went line in Abingdon, Ashton-In-Makerfield, Brownhills, Corringham, Faversham, Fleetwood, Formby, Hebburn, Helensburgh, Hoddesdon, Holywood, Hythe, Prestatyn, Spennymoor, Tilbury, Waltham Abbey and Wombourne.

The service was also switched on at Sandhurst, home of the Royal Military Academy.

The latest stage of the roll out brings the number of large towns and cities covered to 281, and more than 75 per cent of the population. The firm plans to provide 98 per cent of the UK with access to 4G by the end of 2014.

Spencer McHugh, director of brand at EE, said: "Our ongoing 4G roll out means that our customers have access to by far the biggest network in the country. Whether you're at work or on the go, 4GEE lets you do so much more. From superfast web browsing to streaming HD video, even the most disciplined people won't be able to resist getting on their mobile."

Last month, the firm brought 13 more towns onto its 4G network, including Buckingham, Burntwood, Chesham, Chesterfield, Dalkeith, Glossop, Hertford, Rugeley, Sheerness, Thornaby-on-Tees, Ware, Wickford and Witney.

As reported by IT Pro, EE said its 4G network would be capable of speeds of up to 300Mbps by early next year. This would be achieved by adding another 20MHz of 2.6GHz spectrum.

EE was recently voted best UK network in a survey carried out by Rootmetrics that looked at it and rival mobile operators' mobile internet, call, and text performance.
