Apple's job site has a listing for a 'virtual reality' engineer, sparking rumours the technology giant is planning to dive head-first into the VR market.

The job will involve working with "high performance apps that integrate with Virtual Reality systems for prototyping and user testing," according to its description.

The listing was spotted by 9to5Mac, with the full ad reading: "We are looking for a software engineer to develop UI and applications to create next generation software experiences.

"The individual must be able to take participate in collaborative and iterative UI design through the implementation phases & complete performant user experience code for product delivery. This engineer will create high performance apps that integrate with Virtual Reality systems for prototyping and user testing."

Other companies have already started to explore virtual reality, with Mozilla announcing a new VR site, MozVR.com, for Firefox earlier this month and Facebook teaming up with Oculus to create "more engaging," games for its users.

Gaming is a huge area for virtual reality developers, though it is unclear whether Apple is also planning to go down this route or whether they have others ideas for the technology.

Samsung is currently working on a virtual reality headset, announced back in May. This is expected to go head-to-head with the Oculus Rift and Sony's Project Morpheus.
