    BT brings Fusion to businesses

BT is offering its hybrid Wi-Fi/GSM phone service to business customers for the first time.

By Barry Collins, 14 Dec 2006 at 12:15

BT Fusion Wi-Fi for business allows customers to make inexpensive VoIP calls when they're within range of a Wi-Fi connection (either a public hotspot or in their own office), reverting to normal GSM mobile calls when out of Wi-Fi range. BT has been offering Fusion to its home customers for over a year, but says it's now time for SMEs to benefit from the service.

BT says mobile workers will benefit from its investment in Wi-Fi infrastructure. "Customers will be able to use their phone in the 2,000 BT Openzone hotspots in the UK. And in every one of those 12 wireless cities that we're putting up, you'll be able to use your handset," said Bill Murphy, managing director of BT Business at a briefing in London today.

The company claims the handover from GSM to Wi-Fi is flawless and invisible to the end user. To illustrate the point, a BT spokesman claimed one of the company's own executives was on a continuous conference call from Heathrow Airport to the City, that passed through six different handovers with no drop-out or adverse effect on call quality.

The service will launch with just two handsets - the Nokia 6136 and Motorola A910 - with Samsung's P200 being added to the list next year. Prices start from £15 a month, including the handset, with calls to mobile phones capped at 25p for up to 60 minutes.

The company today also launched two more SME services. BT Workspace is a hosted collaboration and project management service, based on Microsoft's Sharepoint. BT has also introduced an online PC backup service, with prices starting from £5.95 for 1GB of storage.
