Sharp boasts of high-end LCD for small form factor devices
By Jason Compton,
Just as the LCD quickly replaced bulky and heavy picture tubes in portable electronics, for years analysts and other trend-watchers have been projecting that organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology would make quick work of LCDs. In theory, volume production of OLED could be considerably cheaper than LCD and enable ultra-low power and even flexible screens to become a part of the mainstream.
LCD manufacturers naturally have a different opinion, as evidenced by 's recent announcement that it is on the verge of shipping samples of a new high-performance LCD panel. The company claims to have designed a two-inch LCD with three times the response time of its normal panel technology, 240x320 resolution, and a contrast ratio of 2000:1. The first panels are expected to appear in high-end mobile phones which double as portable televisions in the Japanese market.
According to recent figures, total LCD technology sales may account for upwards of one-third of Sharp's overall revenues.
