Nokia expands security appliance line
By Jason Compton,
Telecommunications manufacturer Nokia has broadened its line of rack-mount security appliances, with a new low-end device priced for small businesses and a heavy-duty
model geared for mid-sized enterprises.
The Nokia IP690 is a 10-port Ethernet, multi-core appliance aimed at providing one-top security protection for larger companies capable of taking on its approximately $30,000 price tag. Running the Nokia IPSO security application operating system, Nokia boasts a five-year lifecycle for the product and a variety of expansion options to add ports and improve performance over time.
For smaller businesses and remote office hardening needs, Nokia rolled out the IP290, a $4,000 device. The half-size rack appliance ships with 8 total Ethernet ports (expandable with optional cards) on a single-core hardware platform.
Both devices are available with either Check Point VPN or Sourcefire threat management and tracking technology. In Sourcefire configuration, the lower-end IP290 peaks at 100 Mbps of throughput, while the IP690 can push a total of 1 Gbps. In addition to its widespread security partnerships with companies such as Check Point and Sourcefire, Nokia has been highly acquisitive in recent years in order to bolster its hardware and software security profile.
