BT takes top broadband slot again
By Barry Collins,
BT has overtaken Virgin Media to become the country's most popular broadband provider again.
The company said it now has more than 3.66m broadband customers - which equates to more than a quarter of the UK market.
BT has added almost half a million customers in the last quarter: 245,000 brand new subscribers and 195,000 that were acquired through BT's buy-out of PlusNet.
PlusNet customers might be surprised that BT chose to boast about these figures, given that yesterday the company had to take down its webmail service indefinitely after it discovered "security vulnerabilities that it is not possible to patch."
Nevertheless, BT is proud to be back at number one. "I am delighted that we have regained the top slot as the nation's favourite broadband retailer," says Ian Livingston, CEO of BT Retail. "Customers have shown what they clearly want: innovative products and services offering great value that are easy to use and deliver the exciting opportunities that broadband can provide."
BT Yahoo broadband scored a respectable four out of six in IT PRO's sister publication PC Pro's Service and Reliability Awards, which were voted for by more than 16,000 the magazine's readers. However, it failed to break into the top five in any of PC Pro's support, reliability, value and recommend to a friend categories.
