Open source moves to core of business
By Nicole Kobie,
Three-quarters of UK businesses are planning to deploy - or already have deployed - open source software for core business systems, according to research released by Ingres Corporation.
Open source brings benefits in versatility and adaptability, letting enterprise avoid vendor lock-in and cut costs, the study of UK public sector and private businesses found.
"There can be little doubt that open source has now moved out of the basement and into the boardroom," said Brian Mort, Ingres' senior vice president for Northern Europe.
"To do so, open source had to grow up and offer the highest levels of service, support, security and enterprise-grade reliance, on top of the well documented business model flexibility and collaborative nature of product development," said Mort. "All the evidence in the study confirms this, and the enthusiasm for open source promises to continue at pace as the market matures and the reality of achieving real business value explodes many of the long-held and inaccurate myths."
According to the survey, two-thirds of IT professionals said security is no more or no less of an issue with open sourced software than with traditional proprietary software. And 70 per cent expect open source to save money. Indeed, 69 per cent of UK organisations surveyed said "closed-source" software is too expensive.
