Application access gets the royal treatment

Historic Royal Palaces modernises application access.

By Miya Knights, 31 Aug 2007 at 10:15

The independent UK charity that looks after five royal palaces is using new access technology to deliver business applications to its remote workers.

Historic Royal Palaces has this summer deployed Citrix Presentation Server 4.0 to allow its staff, including salespeople at trade shows, IT support staff and departmental managers, to remain productive while away from the office.

The Citrix roll out will enable the charity's staff to access specific, key applications including Novell ConsoleOne, GroupWise email and Microsoft Office 2003 that are used by around 100 staff, whose functions range from financial planning to contract management and admissions.

Rob Ellner, infrastructure manager at Historic Royal Palaces said: "Our ongoing work plays a critical role in keeping our palaces open to the public so we needed a far more flexible way of working. Although it is a small group of people benefiting, they are mobile and need to access mission-critical information while away from the office or on the road."

The charity worked with Citrix partner, Centralis on a staged roll out that prioritised the most critical roles, including its IT and application engineers. The system was then extended to the sales team and departmental managers, who need access to important data, email and reports while travelling.

The charity is responsible for the conservation, maintenance and promotion of the Tower of London, Hampton Court Palace, Banqueting House, Kensington Palace and Kew Palace.
