Firefox downloaded 400 million times
By Maggie Holland,
Open source software organisation Mozilla has announced that downloads of its Firefox web browser have hit the 400 million mark, along with growth of 56 per cent in the last year alone.
The open source browser, which has gained a loyal fan base of original supporters and disgruntled users fed up with alternative, proprietary products, has seen tremendous growth since its birth a little under three years ago in November 2004.
The past 12 months have proved particularly favourable for the browser, with Mozilla adding significantly to the 255 million downloads it reported back in September 2006.
Users' hunger for Firefox has no doubt helped catapult it into the big time, with Xitimonitor.com suggesting that the browser now has more than a quarter (28 per cent) of market share across Europe.
More than a third (35 per cent) share is the aim by the end of this year, according to an interview with Tristan Nitot, president of Mozilla Europe, in December last year.
"Firefox has reached 400 million downloads and demonstrated that not even the world's most powerful companies can keep people from a better, safer, and faster web experience," Mozilla said in a blog post.
