    Notes goes mobile with Visto

Global agreement mobilises Lotus and Domino apps on a multitude of mobile devices, not just BlackBerry phones.

By Miya Knights, 20 Sep 2007 at 10:49

Companies wanting to extend Lotus Notes or Domino onto mobile devices were given a helping hand today, as IBM announced the integration of mobile platform technology.

The technology platform of mobile email provider, Visto is to be integrated with IBM's Lotus Notes Traveller, the new Lotus Notes and Domino client to enable access via mobile devices due out sometime next year.

The announcement essentially means existing Lotus Notes or Domino customers will not have to deploy separate servers behind the corporate firewall to deliver these existing applications to a variety of mobile devices, with the advantage of reducing rollout time and cost.

"This will be a groundbreaking improvement over traditional approaches based on standalone server technology that Visto is excited to pioneer in conjunction with IBM," said Brian Bogosian, Visto president, chairman and chief executive.

Under the terms of the agreement, Visto and IBM will collaborate on developing a connector for Visto Mobile for Lotus Domino, providing existing and new Lotus Domino customers with mobile access to email, calendar appointments, contacts and other data pushed directly to their mobile phones.

Michael Rhodin, IBM Software Group Lotus Software general manager said: "The combination of Lotus Notes Traveller and Visto Mobile offers a compelling mobility solution for the millions of Lotus Notes users."
