ID card support slips

Support for the government's identity card scheme has slipped, according to a poll for a newspaper.

A YouGov poll for the Daily Telegraph newspaper has suggested that more people are now against the controversial scheme than for it. Just 43 per cent of respondents were in favour of the programme, while 48 per cent said they were against it, the newspaper reported.

It's not the first time the newspaper has polled on the issue. In 2003, 78 per cent supported the programme, while in 2005, 45 per cent supported it.

The poll comes amidst the fallout of a data breach at HM Revenue and Customs, which led to the records of 25 million people disappearing, and spurred calls for the ID card scheme to be halted.

Last week, in a parliamentary debate on public sector data security, Conservative shadow chancellor George Osborn compared the ID card project to a Monty Python sketch, but Labour leaders said the scheme is necessary to improve data security.
