When it comes to internet access, the UK is above average in Europe, but still trailing Nordic leaders, according to a survey by the European Union (EU) statistics agency.

Internet access across the EU is increasing, with 54 per cent of households having access of some sort, compared 49 per cent last year, Eurostat said.

Some areas still report low levels of access, such as Bulgaria at 19 per cent, while the Netherlands topped the chart at 83 per cent, followed by Sweden and Denmark.

Those three nations also had the best broadband coverage, according to Eurostat.

The Eurostat numbers showed that 67 per cent of households in the UK had internet access, up four per cent from last year. In addition, 57 per cent of households reported having a broadband connection, up 13 per cent from last year.

According to the statistics, a quarter of Europeans use the web to chat, while 15 per cent use it to make phone calls.

In the UK, 67 per cent of households reported using a search engine, while 10 per cent made calls online, 13 per cent shared files and 14 per have made a website.
