Highways Agency signs £75m IT outsourcing deal

The Highways Agency has signed a five-year contract worth £75 million to outsource its IT infrastructure and applications management.

The executive agency of the Department for Transport responsible for operating, maintaining and improving the strategic road network of England told IT PRO it needed to renew existing contractual arrangements that were due to expire during 2007.

The agreement to outsource its IT infrastructure to IT services company Atos Origin is hoped to save a minimum 15 per cent of the agency's annual IT budget.

Chris Price, Highways Agency service review manager, said: "As a public sector organisation, it is essential that the Highways Agency makes the best use of public funds.

"Following a thorough procurement and evaluation process, Atos Origin demonstrated the capability to deliver improved services - and service levels - to staff, along with demonstrable efficiencies resulting from technological innovations."

Atos Origin will manage and transform the agency's IT infrastructure and applications including ongoing support of a large, complex suite of back office applications. Under the contract, the IT infrastructure and 120 staff will transfer to the outsourcer.

As part of the transformation programme, Atos Origin will deploy its managed desktop platform, Workplace Solutions to automate the deployment and management of the Highways Agency client environment, enabling software to be uploaded and problems to be solved remotely. It is also designed to provide flexible access to corporate resources from desktop and mobile devices.
