    VMware gets disaster recovery tool

Neverfail develops first plug-in to VMware VirtualCentre, providing control point and eliminating single point of failure in virtual environments.

By Miya Knights, 18 Jan 2008 at 12:41

Software company Neverfail will launch on Monday the first continuous availability and disaster recovery plug-in for virtual IT environments running VMware's VirtualCentre Server.

VirtualCentre Server is an important component of most virtual environments running VMware infrastructure, acting as the central control node for configuring, provisioning and managing virtualised IT environments.

John Posavatz, Neverfail vice president for product marketing told IT PRO its VMware using customers found an increasing reliance on VirtualCentre features like VMotion and VMware Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS) to manage their virtual environments had introduced a single point of failure.

VMware VMotion enables the migration of live virtual machines between physical servers and VMware DRS dynamically allocates and balances computing capacity within a group of VMware ESX Server hosts.

Posavatz said: "It may be that, out of two or three physical host systems, an administrator needs to perform some maintenance, so uses VMotion to move the virtual machines from one system to another to power the other down and move the machines back after."

If an issue arises with VMware VirtualCentre Server or one of its components, the Neverfail plug-in ensures the system fails over to a secondary server, which contains all data and maintains connectivity, ensuring availability of the mission-critical systems running in the virtual environment until the outage can be resolved.
