Report links Motorola and Nortel wireless businesses
By Yinka Adegoke and Jonathan Keehner, Reuters,
Embattled mobile phone maker Motorola and networking equipment maker Nortel are reported to be in talks about combining their wireless infrastructure units in what would be the latest in a growing number of mergers and acquisitions in the networking market.
According to a report published by US-based financial newspaper The Wall Street Journal, people familiar with the situation claim the talks could create a joint venture with sales of around $10 billion (£5 billion), combining businesses that make network equipment for mobile phone carriers.
Motorola said in January it was exploring strategic options for the future of its handset division, which could include selling the unit.
Motorola and Nortel were not immediately available for comment.
