MWC 2008: Orange and Nokia to collaborate on services
By Benny Har-Even,
At the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona today, network operator Orange and handset giant Nokia announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding that will see the two companies partner to develop and deploy location based services, as well as maps, mobile advertising and gaming.
Location-based services are set to be a popular feature of the next generation of browser equipped handsets that will enable users to find nearby places and facilities, that might be useful directly via their handsets.
Commenting on the partnership, Olaf Swantee, vice president of Orange's global mobile operations said "We are delighted to be extending our successful relationship with Nokia to drive the uptake of services. We have a strong and enduring partnership with Nokia. With this agreement we intend to bring the power of mobile internet to our customers with a user friendly experience and applications that make a difference to their lives".
"We're excited to work closer with Orange to bring new devices and mobile services to the market" said Kai Oistamo, vice president of Nokia Devices, "as a next important step in our strong and long strategic relationship started in the early 90s."
The companies announced that they intend to expand on this deal with a strategic partnership by mid 2008.
