IT PRO Podcast: More confidential data goes missing

This week we discuss the loss of 370,000 HSBC insurance customer records in the post, EMC's purchase of consumer storage maker Iomega, HP's Eee PC rival, a new twist in the Microsoft Yahoo takeover saga, e-crime and a new boss for BT.

The IT PRO team sits down for another audio discussion of the week's news.

It has been a hectic seven days for the IT industry, with the focus on mergers and acquisitions. Enterprise storage maker EMC surprised many with its purchase of Iomega, the inventor of the Zip drive and more recently the Rev storage system. The acquisition marks EMC's move into the small business and home office market.

Ian Livingstone is named as the new chief executive of BT, businesses are calling for a dedicated e-crime police unit to fight the growing problem of electronic fraud, and Yahoo may be doing a deal with AOL to counter Microsoft's takeover ambitions.

However, the big news of the week was that high street bank HSBC has lost nearly 400,000 customer records after a disc containing the information was lost in the post, in transit to reinsurer Swiss Re. It's a carbon copy of the HM Revenue and Customs data loss, showing that nothing has been learned.
