The Metropolitan Police Service has announced its is extending its existing investment in software from SAP to support frontline and operational activities.

It has chosen SAP for its corporate enterprise resource planning (ERP) software with the aim of achieving greater efficiency from existing resources.

The force chose SAP after competitive tender to exploit its existing SAP environment, currently used for its financial systems. It is hoping to extend its use to frontline policing as well as for its supporting functions.

The Met said it intends to exploit the capabilities of the evolving SAP environment to deliver better services and public value for the citizens and visitors of London.

It will look to streamline core processes on the latest version of SAP ERP and so phase out legacy applications. And it will add new functionality using the ERP software's enhancement packages.

The announcement was made at SAP's European customer conference, currently being held in Berlin.

The Met employs over 31,000 officers, more than 14,000 police staff and more than 4,500 traffic wardens and police community support officers, who preside over one of the world's largest metropolitan areas and a population of 7.2 million.
