Claranet top UK ISP, on the pitch at least
By Iain Thomson,
The second Internet Services Providers' Association (ISPA UK) football championship has seen Claranet win the prize of top team, narrowly beating AOL in sudden death penalties.
Fourteen teams including AOL, Brightview and Zen, spent the day at Wembley battling over the title. The participating teams were split into three groups, with the top placed teams progressing to a knock-out phase.
Jessica Hendrie-Liaño, Chair of ISPA Council said, "The ISPA Charity Cup, in association with Rconnection, is a great way for the 'net industry to get together and support such deserving charities. The tournament has firmly established itself alongside The ISPAs - the UK Internet Industry Awards, as a key date in the Industry's diary.
"The great support for the event demonstrates the ongoing commitment of the Internet community to work together to promote accessibility to the 'net."
The teams managed to raise over £4,000 for charity through sponsorship.
The money will go to two charities close to the IT industry's heart. Half the money will go to Net2Work, which teaches IT skills in deprived areas and the other half will go to the British Liver Trust.
