Verdict: The X750e Firewall appliance offers an impressive range of features for the price. Strong policy based security is enhanced with web content filtering and the improved reporting tools are particularly good, although the number of services that have to be run on other systems does complicate management.

Verdict: The hardware is a tad pricey but this messaging security appliance from Sophos is a winner for its anti-spam capabilities as it's capable of delivering high accuracy scores straight from the box.

Verdict: Forefront Server as an integrated process inside Exchange and SharePoint is a good thing. These are the two locations where there is a vast amount of incoming data and where it would be a disaster should any malware or virus get uploaded. Unfortunately, deploying this as a point solution with no real integration and months before the management pack ships suggests either desperation to be seen doing something or a lack of thought.

Verdict: A few rough edges but Juniper's latest UTM appliance offers a complete security package which includes deep inspection in a well specified appliance with a very high port expansion potential.

Verdict: Arbor delivers a sophisticated network behaviour analysis solution that can provide a wealth of security information about your internal networks and this latest version of Peakflow X delivers a far superior management interface.

Verdict: Anti-spam isn't on the check list but the 1050 is still a powerful UTM appliance offering some very tough security measures plus excellent management facilities as standard and all at a competitive price.

Verdict: The NG-5100 offers some of the toughest web content security measures on the market and backs them up with good anti-virus and URL filtering options. Policy based control makes it very versatile and we found the appliance particularly easy to deploy and use.

Verdict: DA is a very comprehensive package that goes a long way beyond what we expected. While this was exciting it did become very obvious that this is most definitely not a tool for the fainthearted. Any attempt to provide this to an inexperienced member of the support team could cause complete chaos.
