RIM launches software for SMEs
By Nicole Kobie,
Research in Motion (RIM), the maker of the Blackberry, has launched a new package of software for smaller companies, supporting up to 30 users.
RIM said the new BlackBerry Professional Software is based on its Enterprise Server software, but designed specifically for smaller organisations.
Carrie MacGillivray, a senior analyst at IDC, said in a statement published by RIM: "Small and medium-sized organisations have many of the same business requirements for a mobility solution as compared with larger enterprises, but they often require more streamlined administration features...It has become increasingly important for smaller companies to be able to easily and cost-effectively deploy and manage mobile technology solutions in order to remain competitive and responsive to customers."
The software will install on the same server as the email system, whether it is Microsoft's Exchange or IBM's Lotus Domino, RIM said. It comes with a simplified manager interface and the same security architecture as the enterprise server system, RIM added.
The system costs $499 (£240) for five users and $849 (£408) for 10 users, with both packages expandable to 30 users at an additional licensing cost.
