Dell extends Ubuntu Linux offer in the UK
By Miya Knights,
Dell is adding to its Linux-based computer range in the UK after a successful first foray into the market for machines running the free operating system.
The PC maker said it will offer Ubuntu Linux 7.10 on its XPS 1330n laptops in the UK, France, Germany and Spain from Wednesday on its Direct2Dell blog, while US customers will be able to take advantage of the offer in "a week or so".
It added that this move was in response to requests from around the globe to extend the Linux OS computers offer, after its initial launch last May. And it will be the first time the offer is available to Spanish customers.
Dell launched three computers loaded with the open source OS last year, including two desktops and an Inspiron E1505n notebook.
The Dell UK site quoted a price of around £600 for the basic XPS 1330n laptop specification, but this does not include technical support for the Ubuntu OS.
