BSkyB engineers get mobile comms

British Sky Broadcasting (BSkyB), has recently equipped its field service team with 2,000 rugged mobile computers to enable more integration between the entertainment company's engineers and support systems.

BSkyB operates the UK's largest digital pay television platform and is the fastest growing broadband provider.

Using the Intermec CN3 handheld computers, supplied with an extended life battery, the TV, phone and broadband service provider will throughout the day issue with up-to-date work instructions via GPRS to its engineers, who can also respond with updated details, once an engineering job is completed.

The handheld devices include GPRS and 2D Area Imager integrated technology. And BSkyB's engineers have also been issued with home and office-based charging docks, as well as in-vehicle mounting accessories.

The 'triple play' provider expects to benefit from more efficient communication with its field service teams, while the up-to-date support information is expected to enable it to from a greater capacity to manage job exceptions on the day.

Marion Scott, BSkyB head of supply chain development, said: "Intermec was awarded the contract because during our exhaustive internal evaluation process, the CN3 out-performed all other handhelds by gaining higher user acceptance levels from our people. The units have now been successfully rolled out to the field and are playing an important supporting role towards our goal of delivering outstanding customer service."

The vendor added that a tailored support contract, with all equipment serviced locally in the UK, was another key factor in securing the deal with the operator.
