Samsung goes in fast and quiet with new hard disk
New hard drive offers improved noise reduction, speed and reliability.
Electronics company Samsung has launched a new hard drive which it claimed is its quietest ever.
The Spinpoint S166 series of Sata-based 3.5-inch drives feature upgraded versions of the company's proprietary SilentSeek and NoiseGuard technologies used to increase operating speeds while cutting down on noise.
Samsung pointed to its benchmarking figures which showed it generated 24 decibels in idle mode and 27.5 decibels in seek mode, compared to rival drives generating 28 and 32 decibels respectively. The company said that the new drives are intended for use in quiet environments.
The company also said that three new technologies also feature in the drives that will improve performance and reliability. Samsung said the drives new fly-height control gave it better read and write sensitivity by dynamically loweing the fly height in read and write modes while maintaining a consistent and high fly-height across the disc in standard mode.
Also it said it had optimised the actuator assembly and that improved the reliability of the disk's mechanical functions and shock characteristics. It has also upgraded the system-on-a-chip controller for better thermal, disk data transfer speeds and power consumption functions. It also has a spin speed of 7,200rpm with an 8MB buffer.
The disks will be available in 80GB and 160GB capacities. Prices for the drives are yet to be announced.
