Ex-Google designer Doug Bowman has confirmed the rumours and moved over to work for Twitter.

On his blog yesterday, Bowman said: "Yes, it's true. After reading a bit of speculation over the past few weeks, I'll confirm here that I am, indeed, joining Twitter. I don't remember ever being as eager or excited to start a new job as I've been with this one."

He takes over the job of creative director from Twitter co-founder Biz Stone. His main responsibilities will be building a design team, overseeing design challenges and contributing to the company's overall design strategy.

Stone also made comments on his blog welcoming the appointment.

He said: "Doug Bowman has a personal philosophy that design plays a primary role in the interpretation of a message. Twitter is the messaging system we didn't know we needed until we had it so this philosophy is extremely fitting. Creativity is an infinitely renewable resource and Doug embodies that completely."

When announcing his departure from Google, Bowman made some controversial statements about the company's approach to design.
