Microsoft has stuck by its promise that Windows 7 will arrive by January 2010, if not sooner.

The date was confirmed to IT PRO by Laurence Painell, Windows OEM and WGA marketing manager. He said: "We made a promise that we would release Windows 7 no later than three years after Vista. This gives us until January 2010 and we are confident it will be released by then, if not earlier."

The highly-anticipated OS is currently in its beta stage. Microsoft has said the next version to be made public will be the release candidate, which some expect to arrive within the next month or so, suggesting the full release could come much sooner than next January.
