T-Mobile has announced a significant milestone, selling one million G1 Google Android smartphones in the US.

The statement was made by Deutsche Telekom, T-Mobile's parent company, at its quarterly results call last week, but as yet it is unclear how this success compares to UK sales figures.

A Spokesperson from the company said: "The sale of more than one million G1 handsets since the market launch in October 2008 alone, and a total of over 1.5 million 3G-capable handsets sold in the United States, clearly shows... customers are demanding products and services based on these increased bandwidths and that the provision of these products and services is an important selling point in competition."

The Google Android-powered smartphone has hit the one million mark just six months after its release and totals almost two thirds of all T-Mobile's available 3G devices in the US.

A report from mobile advertising firm AdMob has also shown the Android operating system as the fourth most popular in the US, accounting for a six per cent share in the smartphone domains market.

The device is due to make its debut in May.

UPDATE: This morning T-Mobile has released its UK figures showing the G1 is approaching sales of 100,000 units in its first six months over here. It has also confirmed new features coming with the Android 1.5 update - such as touch screen keyboard and video record and playback and confirmed that it will release its second Android-powered device this summer.
