Goldman employee 'stole' million dollar software codes

A computer programmer is accused of stealing valuable trading software from the investment bank giant.

A former computer programmer for Goldman Sachs has been accused of stealing secret trading codes from the company, according to reports.

The New York Times said that Sergey Aleynikov, 39, was accused of stealing proprietary computer programs, which Goldman used to make trades in the financial markets.

He was arrested by US federal agents last week, and plead not guilty to the charges of the theft of trade secrets and transporting them abroad.

The paper said court documents showed Aleynikov was accused of stealing software that generated millions of dollars of profit for the bank.

He was said to have used his desktop computer at Goldman's New York offices to upload code to a website based at a German-based server.

Aleynikov then downloaded the files to his home computer, his laptop computer and a memory device, the paper said.

It was finally alleged he was caught when the bank noticed a surge of data leaving Goldman's servers.

When confronted by investigators, Aleynikov said that he only wanted to collect open source' files and copied more than he intended.

When asked to comment, Goldman Sachs said that it did not comment on former employees.
