Data Domain unveils high-speed dedupe storage

Data Domain DD880

Data Domain today unveiled an enterprise storage system with a focus on high speed deduplication.

The DD880 deduplicates information in line rather than when it reaches the storage, meaning throughput averages at 5.4TB per hour - much faster than when using virtual tape libraries (VTL).

Phil Turner, Data Domain's UK and Ireland sales director, told IT PRO: "The DD880 does not so much change the game but kills the category. It is by far the industry's fastest back up array and clearly proves the way we dedupe in line is highly competitive."

The system features a quad socket Intel processor and has up to 96TB raw capacity or 71TB of addressable RAID 6 storage. It has both 10Gb and 1Gb ethernet ports, in addition to 4Gb fibre channel and is hot swappable.

The nearest competitor, EMC's DL4406 VTL, reaches throughput speeds of 4TB, but since EMC's acquisition of Data Domain last week, the competition has lost relevance.

Turner would not discuss the acquisition in depth but he said: "If you look at what has happened in the market place with EMC and NetApp fighting to pay high prices for us, we are absolutely the market leaders. I'd say we are the only game in town."

The device is available from September with the entry level 22TB prices starting at 240,000.
