Nokia named world’s most eco-friendly tech company

Nokia is the world's most eco-friendly technology company, according to a new global ranking.

The Dow Jones Sustainability Index awards Nokia the accolade of top of the global technology sector.

The Index is a ranking of how world corporations are integrating sustainability into their business, analysed by selecting components from 2,500 companies in more than 50 countries.

Nokia was understandably happy with the ranking, and claimed it was due to the company considering the environment in all the devices it makes.

It also said it supported initiatives around the world who use mobile technology to address environmental concerns, such as with the development of mobile software for health workers to fight the outbreak of disease.

Nokia also said it planned to increase the use of green electricity, which already accounts for a quarter of its energy usage.

"Achieving the world number one slot across the entire global technology industry is a great achievement," said Nokia executive vice president Rick Simonson in a statement.

"It reflects the continued and strong commitment by Nokia employees to sustainable business practises."

He added: "We remain committed to action in this area because acting responsibly is not only the right thing to do, it is also undoubtedly the best thing for our business."
