European cyber security agency ENISA has appointed a new executive director.
Dr Udo Helmbrecht, the former president of the German IT security agency, replaces the outgoing Andrea Pirotti as from today.
The new appointment comes as ENISA celebrates its fifth birthday this year, and as it works for a permanent mandate with the EU beyond its 2012 cut-off.
Helmbrecht said he would help the agency work more closely with European institutions, member states and promote cooperation with business and government.
"Europe and its institutions need an independent body to give expert in security matters," he said.
He continued: "The agency must become a stronger and more respected actor, working as a political advisory body and pacemaker, with the European Commission and the European Parliament."
"As such, the agency's advice should have a lasting impact on the laws and regulation of the Commission and the Member States," he added.
