Acer to launch more Android handsets in 2010

Mobiles

Acer is set to launch up to 10 mobile phones next year based on Google's Android operating system.

Aymar de Lencquesaing, head of the company's phone unit, has been reported as saying the company was looking to release eight to 10 of the devices in 2010 "balancing out" its heavy focus so far on the Windows Mobile operating system.

In an interview with Reuters, he said: "There is definitely momentum behind Android. The pace is faster than most would have anticipated one year ago."

A spokesperson from Acer in the UK told IT PRO: "The releases have not been communicated to us but at the end of the day he is the head of the smartphone group."

Acer released 10 handsets this year but only one was based on the Android, with the other nine using the Windows Mobile OS. It announced in June that the firm had joined Android development group the Open Handset Alliance and would be releasing Android handsets in the fourth quarter.
