Mobile coverage a concern for Ofcom

Mobile coverage

The mobile market is serving the UK well according to Ofcom but the regulatory body still has concerns about mobile coverage.

Ofcom has been conducting an assessment of the mobile sector and released a statement entitled "Mobile Evolution" that is widely positive.

However, it does claim that mobile coverage is not up to scratch and Ofcom is conducting a separate investigation to find out the causes of signal notspots across the UK.

The statement said: "We also consider mobile coverage to be an area of concern. It is not clear whether regulation can play any part in day-to-day coverage issues (although it remains open to government to use coverage obligations to set the framework within which networks are built)."

It concluded that by continuing to promote sector competition many of its concerns would end up being addressed.

In the meantime, Ofcom is working with mobile operators, public bodies and end users to get a full view of the situation before it takes any further action.
