The YouTube homepage was down for about two hours earlier today.

Anxious users were greeted with the message "http/1.1 Service Unavailable".

The outage concerned enough users that the term Service Unavailable' was a brief trending topic on Twitter earlier today.

The only response from YouTube was that they were working on the problem. One YouTube employee tweeted: "Yes able hands are bringing youtube.com back up."

Embedded videos were still working and by early afternoon the site was up and running once again.

A YouTube spokesperson said: "YouTube is up again following a technical issue which has now been resolved. We know how important YouTube is for people and apologise for any inconvenience the downtime may have caused."
