Q&A: Microsoft talks Office Web Apps, social networking in SharePoint
Microsoft is bullish about Office Web Apps and betting on social networking in the enterprise, according to the head of Microsoft's information worker business group.
From a standpoint of delivering enterprise-ready social networking I couldn't be more excited about what SharePoint is going to deliver. But the social networking aspect of it doesn't just stop with SharePoint.
We've introduced the Outlook Social Connector so being able to connect again that Office client experience and that Outlook experience where I'm managing lots of different collaborative threads, if you will email, scheduling, et cetera to be able to bring it into that Office client environment.
The net is, we're making a bit bet on social networking and SharePoint and the Office client will bring that to the enterprise in a way that they expect it, which is around security, around manageability, and around identity management and the like.
How popular was the social networking bit for beta testers? What kind of feedback have you received?
The social networking piece of it was one of the more exciting things that we introduced late into the cycle, meaning late into the beta cycle, and it is one of the most looking at the telemetry data we have it is one of the most exciting new features.
We've introduced the Linked In Connector, the Facebook connector, and we just expect that to grow and out of the box, being able to work with SharePoint too [helps].
