Symantec unveils mobile security for iPad, iPhone and Android

Symantec has introduced a range of new Norton software solutions targeted at mobile devices, including Android and iPhone smartphones as well as the Apple iPad.

As part of the Norton Everywhere initiative, Norton Smartphone Security Beta for Android will be available from June, allowing users who have lost their devices to remotely lock or wipe data from their phone with a simple text message. Anti-malware protection and call blocking services will be provided with this solution too.

June will also see the arrival of Norton Connect Beta, a free mobile app for iPhone, iPad and Android users that lets them access any files archived with Norton Online Backup or Norton 360. The service will be downloadable from either the Android Market or the iPhone App store.

Symantec has also now joined forces with HTC MobilityNow and the pair will work together on developing software for Android and Windows Mobile platforms.

"We are entering a new era where non-PC devices are exploding in numbers, which means more opportunity for cyber criminals. It's becoming more and more critical for consumers to be protected beyond their PCs," said Janice Chaffin, president of Symantec's consumer business unit, in a statement.

The firm announced it will be offering Norton DNS Beta from June too. Using Domain Name System technology, the application will verify the safety of URLs when a user visits the address. The service will also be available for Android users, but Symantec did not confirm whether this will be applied to the iPhone too.

Furthermore, Symantec will be working with Mocana, another security company, as part of the Norton for Smart Devices strategy. They will work on solutions for manufacturers for improved device security.

The Norton for Smart Devices area will also look to embed Symantec security into non-PC internet connected devices, such as smartphones. Even TVs, home security systems and digital picture frames will be able to get cover.

"Symantec's breadth of resources, partnerships, global reach and brand recognition make it uniquely able to deliver security and more to any Internet-connected device in the world," Chaffin added.
