HTC looks forward to Q3 after strong three months

The Taiwanese mobile manufacturer is predicting its best ever quarter, after reporting strong Q2 results on the back of Android's popularity

Mobile phone manufacturer HTC is predicting record quarterly revenues for the third quarter, after seeing revenues jump 58 per cent year-on-year in the last three months.

The Taiwanese firm, and leading producer of smartphones running Google's Android operating system and Microsoft's Windows Mobile, reported sales of 5.4 million units for the quarter, an impressive four-fifths increase over a year ago.

Net profit, meanwhile, came in at 8.6 billion Taiwanese dollars (172 million), with revenues at 1.2 billion Taiwanese dollars.

The company now expects sales to increase by a further 20 per cent in the third quarter to 6.5 million units a 132 per cent increase year-on-year fuelled by strong demand from Europe, North America and Asia.

Despite the strong results, HTC chief financial officer (CFO) Cheng Hui-ming focused on fast growth in the smartphone arena when reporting the results to investors, rather than bragging about his own company's performance.

HTC's fortunes have closely matched those of Android, the Google-led open-source operating system, which debuted in 2008. HTC manufactured the first Android handset, the T-Mobile G1, and have claimed one in every two Android handsets sold is made by HTC.
